I think it's a way to take advantage of what Jesus Diaz is good at; Sensationalizing images and other things he finds on the internet with ridiculous headlines and a short paragraph of how he feels about it - whether his thoughts are accurate or not.
I also think it's a good place for him, since no one is approved to have their comments shown. He has to approve every one of them. That way, all the corrections, negative comments, and general Diaz hate isn't displayed as it would be if it was on Gizmodo.
The challenge I have accepted is to reply with whatever it takes to get approved. The sillier the comment is, the more likely is it to be approved.
